Job Description
Level, a learning technology company, seeks a Sr. Mobile Engine Platform Engineer in Austin. The role centers on a forked Godot engine for a game and learning platform, with emphasis on performance for mobile and other constrained hardware. Work occurs below the application layer to strip, rewrite, and optimize engine components for lower-powered devices.
Responsibilities
- Examine engine internals to isolate product-required functionality and eliminate, rewrite, or refine excess elements
- Measure and tune engine and runtime metrics including CPU, GPU, memory usage, binary size, load times, and power consumption
- Alter core engine and runtime layers to satisfy mobile and constrained-hardware constraints
- Refine memory allocation, asset streaming, asynchronous loading, texture compression, and rendering pipelines
- Optimize draw calls, GPU pipelines, shaders, CPU/GPU synchronization, multithreading, and frame pacing
- Implement platform graphics APIs such as Metal on iOS and Vulkan or OpenGL ES on Android while resolving device-specific issues
- Reduce startup time, package size, and performance variance across device generations
- Define architecture and systems choices tailored to hardware limitations
- Incorporate AI-assisted development tools into engineering processes through active experimentation
Requirements
- Strong professional C++ background
- 7+ years of game engine or runtime experience, including work below the gameplay or application layer
- Shipping experience on iOS and/or Android
- Direct work with constrained hardware and demonstrated knowledge of mobile hardware limits
- Proven profiling and optimization across CPU, GPU, memory, load times, asset footprint, binary size, and frame rate
- Modification of underlying engine or runtime technology rather than feature development on top of an existing engine
- Debugging of device-specific issues across multiple hardware generations
- Strong architecture and systems design capabilities
- For candidates with Unity or Unreal experience: evidence of work below engine abstractions such as native C/C++ development, IL2CPP, native plugins, or engine source modifications
- Experience stripping, customizing, or optimizing an engine or runtime for specific mobile hardware
- Godot core contribution, C++ engine development, or mobile/platform contributions
- Background on a proprietary mobile engine team with deep involvement in memory, rendering, asset systems, platform abstraction, and threading
- Modification of Unreal Engine source
- Battery or power optimization and low-end device tuning
- Hands-on experimentation with AI-assisted development tools
