Research Engineer, Machine Learning

About the Role

Mistral AI is seeking a Research Engineer on the Machine Learning track to build and optimize large-scale learning systems powering our open-weight models. You'll work alongside Research Scientists in either the Platform team (enhancing shared training infrastructure, data pipelines, and cluster tooling) or embedded within a research squad (Alignment, Pre-training, Multimodal, etc.), turning research concepts into scalable, production-ready code.

Responsibilities

• Accelerate researchers by implementing the computationally intensive components of large-scale ML pipelines and developing robust supporting tools.
• Bridge research and production: integrate model checkpoints, streamline evaluation workflows, and expose APIs for internal and enterprise use.
• Execute experiments on cutting-edge deep learning techniques, including distributed training across thousands of GPUs and optimization of large sparse models.
• Design, implement, and benchmark ML algorithms; write clean, efficient Python code.
• Develop prototypes that evolve into production components for Le Chat and our enterprise API.

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent demonstrated experience).
• 4+ years of hands-on experience with large-scale ML codebases.
• Proficiency in PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow; practical experience with distributed training frameworks (DeepSpeed, FSDP, SLURM, Kubernetes).
• Background in deep learning, NLP, or large language models; CUDA optimization or data pipeline experience is a plus.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals: testing, code review, CI/CD practices.
• Self-directed work style with collaborative, low-ego approach to teamwork.
