Registered Nurse Jobs by Clinical Setting

The same RN license can lead to very different workloads, schedules, and career paths. Compare the unit, patient population, orientation, and staffing model—not only the title.

Medical-Surgical / Telemetry RN

Coordinates care for multiple adult patients, manages medications and discharge planning, and builds broad acute-care experience.

ICU / Critical Care RN

Cares for high-acuity patients using ventilators, vasoactive medications, invasive monitoring, and rapid clinical escalation.

Emergency Department RN

Triages unpredictable cases, stabilizes patients, coordinates diagnostics, and shifts priorities quickly as acuity changes.

Operating Room / Perioperative RN

Supports surgical safety through circulating, sterile workflow, patient advocacy, counts, documentation, and recovery handoffs.

Outpatient / Ambulatory RN

Works in clinics, infusion centers, procedural units, and physician offices, often with more predictable daytime schedules.

Home Health / Hospice RN

Assesses patients in their homes, updates care plans, educates families, coordinates aides, and travels between visits.

Registered Nurse Pay and Job Outlook

Registered nursing combines a workforce of roughly 3.5 million with demand driven by older patients, chronic conditions, outpatient care, home health, and replacement needs. Local shortages and working conditions still vary significantly by state and facility.

How to Qualify for Registered Nurse Jobs

Education is only the first step. Licensure, clinical readiness, and credentials must line up with the state and unit where you intend to work.

1

Complete an Approved Nursing Program

Graduate through an ADN, BSN, or approved diploma pathway. Many large health systems prefer a BSN or require completion after hire.

2

Pass the NCLEX-RN

Apply through the appropriate board of nursing, satisfy its eligibility requirements, and pass the national licensure examination.

3

Secure State-Appropriate Licensure

Confirm whether you need a single-state license, a multistate compact license, or endorsement for the state where the job is located.

4

Add Unit-Specific Credentials

Keep BLS current and add ACLS, PALS, NRP, NIHSS, or specialty certification when the patient population and employer require it.

What Strong RN Candidates Demonstrate

Nursing resumes are strongest when they connect patient populations, acuity, equipment, and outcomes to the exact unit being targeted.

Focused assessment and recognition of clinical deterioration
Safe medication administration and reconciliation
Care planning, prioritization, delegation, and handoffs
Electronic health record documentation and order review
Patient and family education at the appropriate health-literacy level
Infection prevention and correct isolation precautions
Collaboration with physicians, therapists, aides, and case management
Calm escalation using clear, structured clinical communication

Registered Nurse Career Progression

RNs can deepen their clinical specialty, move into leadership or education, or complete graduate education for advanced practice. The best next step depends on whether you want more bedside expertise, operational responsibility, or diagnostic authority.

Four Questions to Ask Before Accepting an RN Offer

A headline salary cannot tell you whether a unit is safe, supportive, and sustainable. Use the interview to understand the real working environment.

1

Ask About Ratios and Acuity

Request the typical and worst-case patient assignment, support staff coverage, and escalation process when census or acuity rises.

2

Understand Orientation

Confirm orientation length, preceptor consistency, competency expectations, and whether orientation can be extended when needed.

3

Calculate Total Compensation

Include night and weekend differentials, call pay, overtime rules, retirement match, insurance cost, PTO, parking, tuition support, and bonuses.

4

Read Bonus Repayment Terms

Sign-on and relocation bonuses may require one or two years of service. Know exactly what must be repaid if you transfer or leave early.

Registered Nurse Jobs — Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do registered nurse jobs require?

⌄
RNs must graduate from an approved nursing program, pass the NCLEX-RN, and hold an active license accepted in the state where they practice. Employers may also require BLS, ACLS, PALS, specialty experience, or unit-specific certification.

How much do registered nurses earn in the US?

⌄
The BLS reports a median annual wage of $97,550, or $46.90 per hour, in May 2025. Base pay varies considerably by state, facility, specialty, union coverage, experience, and shift. Differentials, overtime, bonuses, and travel stipends can materially change total compensation.

Can an RN license be used in another state?

⌄
A multistate license issued under the Nurse Licensure Compact can permit eligible nurses to practice in other compact states, subject to the compact’s rules. Nurses moving to or working in a noncompact state generally need licensure by endorsement there.

Which RN specialties are easiest to enter?

⌄
Medical-surgical, telemetry, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, behavioral health, and some home health roles often provide broad entry points. ICU, emergency, operating room, and labor and delivery positions may prefer experience or a structured residency.

What should I compare besides the RN hourly rate?

⌄
Compare staffing and acuity, patient ratios, orientation length, schedule rules, mandatory overtime, differentials, retirement match, health coverage, PTO, tuition support, parking, call requirements, and repayment terms attached to bonuses.

Disclaimer: Employment and wage figures are based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 data and 2025–2035 projections. Nursing licensure, compact eligibility, scope of practice, credentials, staffing, and pay vary by jurisdiction and employer. Verify requirements with the relevant board of nursing and hiring organization.
