Research Engineer, Data Infrastructure

Mistral AI is seeking a Research Engineer to design and operate next-generation data infrastructure supporting our frontier AI models and enterprise solutions. Based in Palo Alto, you'll take full lifecycle ownership of massive compute and storage systems, from architecture through production operations, working across distributed teams globally.

About the Role

This position focuses on building and scaling data infrastructure for high-performance AI training and fine-tuning. You'll architect multi-cluster orchestration layers, design modern storage systems for exabyte-scale datasets, and develop internal training platforms. The role involves decoupling control and data planes, managing metadata and lineage systems, and participating in on-call rotations for critical training workloads.

Responsibilities

• Build and operate distributed compute and storage systems at scale across multiple regions and hardware types
• Architect and maintain multi-cluster orchestration layers optimizing workload placement across diverse environments
• Design and implement transitions to modern, columnar storage formats capable of handling fine-tuning datasets at exabyte scale
• Contribute to internal training platform development for seamless model training across Kubernetes and SLURM environments
• Implement metadata and lineage management systems providing visibility into complex data and model pipelines
• Deploy and operate cloud-native data platforms ensuring reliability and efficiency at massive scale
• Participate in on-call rotations supporting critical training infrastructure

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience in Data Infrastructure, MLOps, or Infrastructure Engineering
• Proficiency in Python and experience solving data lake architecture challenges
• Strong expertise with Kubernetes-native tooling and multi-cluster environments
• Demonstrated ability to debug and operate large-scale distributed systems
• Experience or strong interest in foundational compute and storage platforms
• Ability to thrive in ambiguous, high-growth environments while building reliable, secure, and scalable systems
