Job Description

About the Role

As a Design Engineer at Ramp, you bridge design and front-end engineering to build production-quality financial interfaces. You'll prototype directly in code, validate with customers, and ship experiences that balance craft, performance, and reliability while making complex financial behavior feel intuitive and safe.

About Ramp

Ramp builds financial infrastructure embedded in the transaction flow for 70,000+ companies, automating over $200B in annualized spend. You'll work on high-stakes, data-dense problems where every decision shapes how businesses authorize payments, manage risk, and close their books.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build complete product experiences from concept through production, using layout, interaction, and motion to clarify complex workflows.
  • Leverage AI tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Claude) as core collaborators—draft intent, explore implementations, scaffold components, and refine with your judgment applied throughout.
  • Build interactive prototypes in React and TypeScript, then test with real users using self-serve research to validate flows before full buildout.
  • Extend Ramp's design system with reusable components and patterns that are expressive, brand-aligned, and easy to scale.
  • Design clear patterns that reveal what AI agents and automation are doing for customers, using hierarchy, copy, and motion to build trust without overwhelming the interface.
  • Prioritize performance and accessibility—ship work that respects semantics, focus states, reduced motion, and Core Web Vitals, partnering with engineers on optimization.
  • Document and share AI-native workflows, prompts, and patterns across the design and engineering team.

Requirements

  • Proven experience spanning both design and front-end engineering, with end-to-end ownership from idea to shipped interface.
  • Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript or JavaScript, semantic HTML, and modern CSS.
  • Active hands-on experience with Cursor and Claude Code; clear opinions on extracting high-quality output from AI tools.
  • Portfolio demonstrating high visual and interaction craft in live products or working prototypes.
  • Systems mindset and track record building reusable components and design patterns.
  • Demonstrated commitment to performance, accessibility, and reliability as core aspects of craft.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; comfort collaborating with designers, engineers, and marketers.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to New York, NY.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience contributing to a design system or front-end component library.
  • Familiarity with experimentation or analytics tools.
  • Experience with headless CMS, design tokens, or theming systems.
  • Background in fintech, B2B SaaS, or other trust-heavy domains.
  • Interest in mentoring others on AI-native design and engineering workflows.
