Job Description

About the Role

OPSWAT is a global leader in IT, OT, and ICS critical infrastructure cybersecurity. We're seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the engineering organization for MetaDefender Managed File Transfer, our secure managed file transfer solution trusted by governments and critical infrastructure operators. This is a hands-on, technically-focused leadership role with full accountability for architecture, delivery, quality, and the teams building the product across air-gapped, cross-domain, internet-connected, and native-cloud deployment environments.

About the Product

MetaDefender Managed File Transfer embeds OPSWAT's threat prevention capabilities—multiscanning, Deep CDR, and DLP—directly into every file flow. The product serves high-assurance environments and operates across multiple deployment form factors, each with distinct security, assurance, and operational demands.

Responsibilities

  • Lead AI-first engineering practices: orchestrate AI agents to create specifications, generate code and tests, verify results, and conduct reviews while ensuring humans validate every line shipped to production.
  • Remain directly hands-on in the codebase: set architecture patterns, write and review critical code, prototype solutions, and unblock hard technical problems.
  • Own end-to-end delivery of the product roadmap: translate Product Management's "what to ship" into engineering execution, controlling delivery sequencing, technical risk, quality, security, and release across all deployment form factors.
  • Drive technical direction: establish architecture and technology choices that support high-assurance, scalable deployments; defend engineering positions clearly.
  • Build and lead a distributed high-performance team: recruit, develop, and retain top engineers across Romania, Vietnam, and Hungary; create clear career paths and code quality norms.
  • Establish performance-based management: set measurable expectations, recognize top performers, and address underperformance decisively.
  • Champion security-first code review: apply a security lens to both human-written and AI-generated code, identifying injection risks, insecure defaults, missing validation, and privilege-escalation vectors in file-handling and authentication paths before shipping.
  • Improve engineering velocity: continuously optimize CI/CD pipelines, AI-assisted development workflows, incident response, and operational maturity.
  • Codify AI-native practices: establish playbooks, AI context files, coding harnesses, test frameworks, and review norms that other OPSWAT product teams can adopt.
  • Partner cross-functionally: collaborate with VP of Products, Product Management, Design, and security leadership to turn roadmap into execution while managing scope and timeline trade-offs.

Requirements

  • Full agentic development experience: personal track record running end-to-end agentic, AI-powered software development lifecycles in B2B and high-security enterprise environments with compliance and assurance requirements. Demonstrable work via PRs, commit history, shipped products, or portfolio showing agentic workflows driving real delivery.
  • Shipped product via AI-powered SDLC: demonstrated experience taking a product from specification through release using an end-to-end AI-assisted lifecycle (spec generation, code/test generation, automated verification, AI-assisted review, CI/CD).
  • Engineering leadership: 8+ years of software engineering experience and 3+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers or leads through complex product delivery at scale.
  • Performance-based team building: proven track record building high-performing teams through rigorous, fair performance management, promoting excellence, and making timely talent decisions.
  • Deep technical fundamentals: strong command of design patterns, SOLID principles, and modern architecture. Ability to evaluate AI-assisted code with the same rigor as human-authored code.
  • Scalable systems experience: proven history designing and building scalable, distributed solutions including relational/document databases, cloud-native services, and modern CI/CD systems.
  • Quality and test discipline: commitment to tested, maintainable code; using AI to accelerate test scaffolding while validating coverage is real and meaningful.
  • Distributed team leadership: demonstrated ability to lead and align engineers across countries and time zones in remote/hybrid, multi-country environments.
  • Talent identification and communication: ability to identify strong engineers, make a compelling case for joining, and communicate technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders without oversimplifying.
  • Security-conscious approach: experience operating in security-critical environments where security-first design, code review, and incident response are non-negotiable.

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Domain familiarity with managed file transfer, secure content delivery, data security, or critical infrastructure markets.
  • .NET/C# ecosystem expertise, enough to evaluate architectural decisions and conduct credible PR reviews.
  • Cloud-native and container platforms: design or operational experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure/GCP, including using AI agents for infrastructure automation.
  • AI context-file authoring: experience writing AI context files (e.g., CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules) that encode architecture and forbidden patterns for consistent AI output.
  • AI in CI/CD pipelines: familiarity running AI agents inside pipelines for auto-fixing, test generation, or safe migrations as standard team practices.
  • International team experience: track record building and maintaining engineering culture and delivery quality across multiple countries and time zones.
  • Async and high-throughput systems: experience validating concurrency and thread-safety in high-throughput services.

Location & Work Arrangement

Remote-based role with worldwide flexibility. Preference for candidates in the UK, USA, or near an OPSWAT-operated location. Reports to VP, Products. Leads a distributed team across Romania, Vietnam, and Hungary.

Benefits

  • Lead a product trusted by critical infrastructure customers across multiple deployment architectures; your architecture and culture decisions will shape it for years.
  • Influence across the OPSWAT engineering portfolio: AI-native patterns you establish will propagate across other product teams.
  • Work from anywhere with a remote-friendly setup.
  • Stable, growing international company with customer presence across 50+ countries.
  • Mandate to build AI-native engineering practices with latitude to execute your vision.
  • Attractive compensation with regular performance assessments and flexibility for the right candidate.
