Staff Software Engineer

About the Role

Affirm is seeking a Staff Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Acquisition & Onboarding team within the Consumer organization. This leadership position combines technical strategy and hands-on engineering, requiring someone who can define architectural direction, mentor senior engineers, and drive quality and velocity across mobile, web, and backend systems. You'll directly shape the first experience customers have with Affirm's buy-now-pay-later platform, influencing conversion, retention, and business outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute technical strategy at a 12-month horizon, aligning team efforts with critical business objectives
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to validate technical decisions, manage risk, and communicate trade-offs
• Establish and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes that scale across the team
• Own operational excellence by designing monitoring, on-call rotations, runbooks, testing frameworks, and alerting to ensure system reliability and availability
• Set code review standards and design principles for the team; advocate for quality through documentation and technical talks
• Develop talent through feedback, mentorship, and leading by example
• Participate in on-call rotation to support production systems

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience
• Proficiency in backend systems design and development using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes at scale
• Proficiency in web and mobile development with declarative UI frameworks (React, React Native, or Vue)
• Demonstrated experience delivering major features across full stack architecture
