Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Deal reporting)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The Deal Reporting team builds critical capital partner integrations and services that automate funding processes safely and reliably. We're seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead our first international team, setting technical strategy and building the integrations, services, and testing infrastructure that power funding for every Affirm loan.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute technical strategy for your team on a yearly timeline, aligning it with business-critical projects
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics teams throughout the development lifecycle to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs
• Act as a force multiplier by defining technical solutions and operational processes that scale across your team
• Oversee your team's operations and availability by implementing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting to support on-call efforts and operational excellence
• Establish and advocate for code review and design standards that foster a culture of quality and ownership across your team and beyond
• Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example

Requirements

• 7+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, or similar languages
• Extensive experience building highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Strong knowledge of Apache Spark and its internals
• Experience with task orchestration systems such as Airflow or Temporal (preferred)
• Proven track record delivering major features, system components, or managing deprecation through technical planning and execution
• Ability to write high-quality, easily understood code that others can build upon
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and moving fluidly between low-level language details and large-scale system architecture
• Demonstrated growth through gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
