Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Deal Reporting)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Deal Reporting team builds critical capital partner integrations and automation services to fund Affirm loans safely and reliably. We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead our first international team, establishing technical strategy and building the backend systems and infrastructure that power deal funding.

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on Deal Reporting, you'll set multi-year technical direction for your team while driving business-critical projects forward. You'll partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and Capital Markets teams to translate complex financial structures and reporting requirements into scalable backend systems. This role requires on-call participation to support operational reliability and availability.

Responsibilities

• Define and communicate technical strategy on a year-long horizon, ensuring alignment between engineering execution and business objectives
• Collaborate across product development lifecycle with product management, design, and analytics to surface technical risks, trade-offs, and sustainability concerns
• Serve as a force-multiplier for your team by advocating for sound technical solutions and establishing operational best practices
• Own your team's operational posture by designing monitoring, alerting, triage rotations, playbooks, and testing infrastructure to ensure consistent availability
• Build a culture of quality and ownership through code review standards, design documentation, and technical leadership both within and across teams
• Develop team members through mentorship, feedback, and technical guidance

Requirements

• 7+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
• Proven track record building highly available distributed systems on AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Deep knowledge of Apache Spark and its internals
• Experience with task orchestration systems such as Airflow or Temporal (preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to deliver major features, system components, or deprecations through technical planning and execution
• Ability to write clear, maintainable code that others can easily understand and build upon
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and moving across abstraction levels, from language idioms to large-scale system architecture
• History of gathering feedback and iterating on solutions to improve impact
• Willingness to participate in on-call rotation
