Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Infrastructure)

About the Role

Affirm is transforming consumer credit through transparent, flexible buy-now-pay-later solutions. The Trust Infra team strengthens our infrastructure security by embedding protective controls throughout the provisioning and deployment lifecycle, automating developer workflows, and establishing safeguards for rapid, secure delivery. You'll lead a team owning critical security components including secrets management, authentication and authorization, cryptography, certificate workloads, and core Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure systems.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly team objectives, guiding engineers through complex, open-ended problems and ensuring consistent support throughout execution
• Collaborate across product management, design, and analytics to articulate technical constraints, evaluate trade-offs, and inform decisions during the development lifecycle
• Identify and advocate for project, process, technology, and business improvements; take ownership of solutions
• Maintain operational excellence for your team's infrastructure by establishing monitoring, tracking key metrics, managing escalations, and participating in on-call rotations
• Establish and elevate quality standards through code review practices and design documentation; champion these standards across teams via technical writing and knowledge sharing
• Develop team members through constructive feedback, mentorship, and modeling strong engineering practices

Requirements

• 4+ years designing, building, and shipping backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
• Proven experience developing highly available distributed systems on AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Deep expertise in Kubernetes resource management, Helm charts, and operator patterns focused on security workloads
• Demonstrated ability to define technical roadmaps for significant features or system components with pragmatic, simple solutions
