Manager, Software Engineering (Developer Environments)

Affirm is hiring a Manager of Software Engineering to lead the Developer Environments team, supporting 800+ engineers across a fintech platform. Based remotely in Canada, you'll oversee the design and operation of ephemeral development environments, CI/CD integration, test automation infrastructure, and release engineering tools that enable engineers to ship code safely and quickly. The Developer Environments team owns a critical part of the inner-loop developer experience—the systems between a developer's laptop and production.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute technical strategy for Developer Environments on a year-long horizon, aligned with business and product goals.
• Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering ownership and technical excellence.
• Own the design, scalability, and reliability of systems powering ephemeral developer environments in both development and CI workflows.
• Drive measurable improvements to developer velocity and reliability metrics (environment startup time, success rate, performance, resource utilization, debuggability).
• Improve environment provisioning, stability, and teardown workflows.
• Implement monitoring, alerting, incident response processes, and operational playbooks to minimize downtime and developer impact.
• Collaborate with CI/CD, infrastructure, security, and product engineering teams to integrate environments cleanly with build and test workflows.
• Partner with engineering leadership to align Developer Environments priorities with broader platform and reliability goals.

Requirements

• Proven experience managing engineering teams focused on developer tooling, infrastructure, or platform systems.
• Deep hands-on experience with ephemeral environment management, CI/CD pipelines, or test automation infrastructure.
• Demonstrated ability to design and operate systems at scale, with focus on reliability, performance, and usability.
• Experience with environment provisioning, containerization, or infrastructure-as-code technologies.
• Track record of setting technical strategy and driving measurable improvements to developer productivity.
