Software Engineer II, Back-end (Card Mgmt & Transaction Processing)

About the Role

Affirm is transforming consumer credit through transparent, flexible buy-now-pay-later products. The Affirm Card represents one of the company's fastest-growing offerings and a major driver of platform GMV. You'll join the Card Management & Transaction Processing team, which builds and operates the infrastructure behind card issuance and transaction processing—from authorization and account lifecycle management to tokenization and platform security.

As a Software Engineer II, you'll work on systems that sit on the critical path of every card transaction, handling scale and reliability demands that grow alongside Affirm's expanding card portfolio. This role offers the opportunity to tackle complex engineering challenges while collaborating across product, design, and cross-functional teams on strategic, high-impact initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Break down larger projects into discrete tasks with your tech lead and manager, deliver them in phases, and coordinate with peers to ensure timely completion
• Partner with product management, design, and analytics teams during ideation and planning; articulate technical constraints and contribute to decisions that weigh risks and trade-offs
• Maintain system health and availability by establishing metrics, monitoring performance, responding to escalations, and participating in on-call rotation
• Foster team culture by engaging in growth activities, including participation in the hiring and interview process

Requirements

• 1.5+ years of professional experience as a software engineer
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems; proficiency in Python or Kotlin
• Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals and hands-on experience with AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Ability to translate business problems into multi-component software solutions and execute cleanly
