Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Batch Infrastructure)

The Batch Infrastructure team builds and maintains the compute platform that powers critical batch workloads across machine learning, product, and financial engineering at Affirm. We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to lead infrastructure development, mentor engineers, and solve scalability challenges as the company grows.

About the Role

You'll lead the Batch Infrastructure team in building reliable, scalable, self-serve compute solutions on the cloud. This role combines hands-on backend development with technical leadership—you'll own quarterly goals, guide engineers through complex problems, and ensure operational excellence across scheduled and on-demand compute systems.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly team goals; lead engineers through ambiguous, open-ended infrastructure challenges
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics teams to align technical decisions with business priorities and risk trade-offs
• Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues; advocate for solutions across the organization
• Establish and monitor operational metrics; support on-call efforts and maintain high availability of batch processing systems
• Set code review and design standards for your team; champion quality practices through documentation and technical talks
• Develop team talent through feedback, mentorship, and modeling excellence

Requirements

• 4+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
• Proven track record building highly available distributed systems on AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Experience building or managing workflow orchestration frameworks (Airflow, Flyte, Prefect, Temporal, Luigi, or similar)
• Experience scaling frameworks like Spark or Flink for large-scale datasets on Kubernetes
• Ability to define technical plans for significant features with elegant, simple, extensible design
• Proficiency making substantial changes in large codebases while maintaining code quality and clarity
