Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Lake Analytics Platform)

Affirm is building honest, transparent credit products. The Data and Storage Services team owns Affirm's data infrastructure across OLTP and OLAP systems—from online checkout databases and batch orchestration to streaming, analytics, and platform tooling. We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to strengthen the platform and applications layer, building systems that enable teams across Affirm to work with data reliably and at scale.

About the Role

You'll be a core contributor to platform reliability, self-service capabilities, and infrastructure for data tooling and semantic layers. Your focus: designing and operating systems that let engineers build, deploy, and manage data applications with confidence, while maintaining strong governance and security posture across analytical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Build and operate core platform capabilities—automated provisioning, deploy pipelines, access control, service lifecycle management, and reliability tooling that let teams work with data at scale.
• Develop integrations between the platform and internal systems: CI/CD pipelines, identity and secrets management, external APIs, and event-driven hooks to enable self-service access.
• Strengthen data access and governance by designing and operating secure access patterns—RBAC, managed-access schemas, dynamic data masking, secure views, and cross-database grants—that build trust without creating operational bottlenecks.
• Identify recurring support patterns—access provisioning, pipeline failures, service health, secrets management—and build automation that moves teams toward self-service, eliminating manual toil.
• Improve observability and incident response through telemetry, alerting, and logging infrastructure. Establish runbooks and operational patterns that reduce blast radius and recovery time.
• Participate in on-call coverage, triage production incidents across platform services, and execute platform-level maintenance with care for stability.

Requirements

• Strong backend systems design and implementation experience at scale.
• Proven ability to operate distributed systems and design for reliability.
• Experience with data infrastructure, analytics platforms, or similar complex system ownership.
• Fluency with at least one systems programming language (Go, Rust, Java, Python, or similar).
• Familiarity with governance, RBAC, or access control patterns.
• Comfort with on-call responsibility and production incident response.
