Software Engineer II, Backend (Unified Data Platform)

About the Role

Affirm is building a Unified Data Platform—the data backbone that powers underwriting, fraud decisions, and product experiences across the company. As a Software Engineer II, Backend, you'll join a team creating a governed, federated layer that consolidates cross-domain data pipelines into a single, reliable read surface for analytics and ML systems.

Responsibilities

• Break down larger initiatives into phased deliverables with your tech lead and manager, coordinating across teams to meet timelines
• Collaborate with domain teams acting as data producers, infrastructure teams managing SLOs, and downstream analytics and product consumers
• Design and maintain data contracts and lineage to ensure correctness guarantees that other teams depend on
• Own operational excellence: create monitoring systems, establish metrics, troubleshoot issues, and participate in on-call rotations
• Articulate technical constraints and trade-offs across engineering to inform architectural and product decisions
• Contribute to team growth through interview participation and peer support

Requirements

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Proven experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with distributed systems fundamentals and their operational challenges
• Comfort with early-stage platform architecture and shaping technical direction
• Strong communication skills across organizational boundaries
