Software Engineer II, Backend (Unified Data Platform)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. We're seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Unified Data Platform team, building the governed, federated data substrate that powers our underwriting, fraud decisions, and product experiences across the company.

In this role, you'll own the correctness and availability of a critical shared platform that downstream teams depend on for analytics, ML, and product decisions. You'll work across organizational boundaries—partnering with domain teams as data producers, collaborating with infrastructure on SLO targets, and understanding the needs of both online and offline consumers.

About the Role

The Unified Data Platform team is building a single, governed read surface for user-keyed data that replaces ad hoc cross-domain ETL pipelines. This is early-stage platform work where you'll help shape architecture, establish data contracts and lineage rigor, and communicate technical trade-offs across multiple teams. You'll take personal ownership over the correctness guarantees that the broader engineering organization relies on.

Responsibilities

• Break down larger platform projects into phased tasks with your tech lead and manager; deliver work collaboratively and on schedule
• Partner across engineering teams to articulate technical constraints, evaluate risks, and make sound architectural decisions during the product development lifecycle
• Own the operational health of your team's systems—define and monitor metrics, escalate issues, and participate in on-call rotations to maintain availability
• Contribute to team culture through growth activities, including participation in the interview process

Requirements

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with distributed systems fundamentals
