Senior Software Engineer, Back-end, (Repayment Scheduling)

Affirm is reimagining consumer credit through transparent, straightforward financing—enabling people to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compound interest. The Repayment Scheduling backend engineering team owns the systems that process up to $40B in automated payments annually, directly improving financial outcomes for over 20 million users.

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Backend to join our Europe-based team (Poland, single time zone) and help scale payment orchestration and configuration systems. You'll ship code to production every two-week sprint, measure impact on user financial health and company metrics, and own quarterly objectives with full ownership and autonomy.

About the Role

This is a senior-level backend engineering position focused on payment automation infrastructure. You'll lead engineering efforts through complex, open-ended problems while maintaining operational excellence and building a culture of quality and ownership on your team. Your work directly affects the reliability and speed of payment processing for millions of users.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly engineering goals; guide team members through ambiguous technical challenges
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and analytics during ideation and decision-making—articulate technical constraints and evaluate trade-offs
• Identify and champion solutions for project, process, technology, and business issues
• Maintain operational health by defining metrics, monitoring systems, participating in on-call rotations, and ensuring service availability
• Establish and advocate for code review, design, and quality standards across your team and beyond
• Mentor and develop team members through feedback, guidance, and example

Requirements

• 4+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, or similar languages
• Proven experience building highly available distributed systems on AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Track record of taking ownership of systems from design through production operation
• Comfortable with ambiguity, fast iteration cycles, and data-driven decision-making
