Software Engineer I, Backend (Collections)

About the Role

Affirm is building a credit platform designed around consumer flexibility and transparency. The Collections team, part of the Repayments organization, develops systems to manage delinquent accounts effectively—delivering the right outreach at the right time while maintaining high system reliability and uptime. In this backend engineering role, you'll contribute to building scalable platform solutions that help keep our loan portfolio healthy and support customers in staying current on their obligations.

Responsibilities

• Work on backend systems and features aligned with team projects and organizational goals
• Participate in on-call rotation to support system reliability and incident response
• Collaborate with Collections team members, Product managers, and risk teams to design and implement recovery strategies for delinquent accounts
• Write clear, testable, and maintainable code that balances speed of delivery with system stability
• Navigate and debug large codebases, provide constructive code review feedback, and contribute to knowledge-sharing within the team
• Engage in team development activities and take ownership of your professional growth

Requirements

• Prior work or internship experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and technologies including AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Ability to translate business problems into multi-component software solutions and execute with well-structured, tested code
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of growth, seek feedback proactively, and navigate complex engineering environments
