Software Engineer I, Backend (Collections)

Affirm is reinventing consumer credit to be more transparent and customer-friendly, enabling people to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Collections team, part of the Repayments organization, builds the platform that identifies and recovers delinquent accounts through targeted outreach, monitoring, and reliable systems. You'll partner with product managers, risk teams, and other engineers to manage loans through delinquency and develop recovery strategies that keep our portfolio healthy.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer I on the Collections team, you'll contribute to building and scaling the next-generation platform that handles growing loan volumes while maintaining high availability and reliability. Working closely with teammates and product partners, you'll help develop robust collections solutions that support customers in staying current and recovering from payment delays.

Responsibilities

• Build backend systems that contribute to the team's collections and repayments initiatives
• Collaborate proactively with team members and stakeholders to manage visibility, communication, and decision-making around technical risks and trade-offs
• Balance speed and quality in your work to meet business goals while protecting system reliability and uptime
• Participate in code reviews, debug complex issues, and help establish a culture of growth and learning within the team

Requirements

• Prior work or internship experience designing, developing, and deploying backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and technologies including AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Ability to translate business problems into solutions across multiple software components, writing clear, well-tested, and maintainable code
• Comfort navigating large codebases, debugging, and providing constructive code review feedback
• Demonstrated ownership of your professional development through proactive feedback-seeking
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration across global teams
