Senior Software Engineer, Backend (PBA - Growth)

The Engineering team builds the reliable, performant, and scalable systems that power this mission across the entire business. The Powered by Affirm (PBA) team specifically owns the APIs and solutions that integrate Affirm with enterprise merchants and partners, managing everything from checkout and merchant onboarding to custom end-to-end integrated solutions.

About the Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the PBA - Growth team, you'll lead engineering efforts on a team solving complex, open-ended problems in payment infrastructure and merchant integration. You'll own quarterly goals, drive technical decisions collaboratively with product and analytics, and maintain operational excellence across your team's systems.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly team goals, guiding engineers through ambiguous technical challenges
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and technical planning phases, articulating constraints and advocating for risk-aware trade-offs
• Identify and drive resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues
• Establish and monitor metrics for system availability, escalate operational issues, and participate in on-call support
• Set and elevate code review and design standards across your team and the broader engineering organization through documentation and technical presentations
• Mentor team members through feedback, guidance, and example-setting

Requirements

• 4+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
• Proven experience building highly available distributed systems on AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Track record defining technical plans for significant features with elegant, simple, and extensible designs
• Ability to make substantial changes safely in large codebases using established tools and practices
• Demonstrated ownership of your own growth and development
