Software Engineer II, Backend (Collections)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. The Collections team, part of the Repayments organization, builds platform solutions to maximize recovery of delinquent accounts by delivering targeted outreach, monitoring system health, and ensuring high reliability. You'll collaborate with product managers, risk teams, and fellow engineers to manage loans throughout the delinquency lifecycle and develop recovery strategies.

About the Role

We're seeking a Software Engineer II to help build the next generation of collections platform solutions. You'll work with your team to manage growing loan volumes while maintaining high availability and system reliability. This role involves developing robust backend systems that keep our loans portfolio healthy and help customers recover from payment delays.

Responsibilities

• Break down larger projects into individual tasks with support from your tech lead and manager, delivering work in multiple phases while collaborating across teams
• Partner with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and technical decision-making, articulating technical constraints and trade-offs
• Own operations and availability of your team's systems by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues, and participating in on-call rotations
• Participate in on-call rotation as a core responsibility of this role
• Contribute to team culture through growth activities, including participation in the interview process

Requirements

• 2.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and technologies including AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Ability to translate business problems into solutions involving multiple software components and execute with clear, well-tested, and extensible code
• Comfortable navigating large codebases, debugging code, and providing constructive feedback to peers
