Software Engineer II, Backend (Collections)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. The Collections team within Repayments builds a robust platform designed to maximize recovery of delinquent accounts by delivering targeted outreach at the right time while ensuring system reliability and detecting issues early. As a Software Engineer II, Backend, you'll collaborate with product managers, risk teams, and other engineers to manage loans through delinquency and develop recovery strategies.

About the Role

You'll develop backend systems that handle growing loan volumes while maintaining high availability and reliability. Working closely with your Collections team, product managers, and analytics partners, you'll build solutions that keep the loan portfolio healthy and help customers recover from payment delays.

Responsibilities

• Break down larger projects into individual tasks with your tech lead and manager; deliver work in phases and collaborate across teams for timely completion
• Partner with product management, design, and analytics during ideation; articulate technical constraints and support decisions that weigh risks and trade-offs
• Support operational health and availability of team systems by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues, and participating in on-call rotations
• Contribute to team growth by engaging in hiring activities and mentoring peers

Requirements

• 2.5+ years of software engineering experience
• Proven experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems; proficiency in Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and technologies including AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Ability to translate business problems into solutions across multiple software components; strong coding practices (clear, tested, extensible code)
• Comfortable navigating large codebases, debugging, and providing constructive code reviews
• Demonstrated ownership of professional growth and development
