Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Reliability Platform)

About the Role

Affirm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build a next-generation reliability platform that helps production systems teams understand, debug, and improve service health. You'll work at the intersection of distributed systems engineering and AI-assisted development, combining rapid iteration with a high bar for reliability and maintainability.

Responsibilities

• Own quarterly goals for your team and lead engineers through ambiguous, open-ended problems to delivery
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, articulation of technical constraints, and risk-aware decision-making
• Proactively identify and lead solutions for project, process, technology, and business issues
• Establish operational excellence by creating monitoring metrics, escalating issues, and supporting on-call efforts for your team's systems
• Drive quality and ownership standards by setting code review and design practices, advocating for them across the organization through writing and technical talks
• Develop team talent through feedback, mentorship, and leading by example

Requirements

• 4+ years of software engineering experience
• Demonstrated expertise designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Experience shipping web applications with declarative UI frameworks such as React or Vue
• Practical experience applying LLMs or AI frameworks to enhance automation with appropriate guardrails and citations
• Proven ability to define technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible design
• Strong code quality standards and ability to make large-scale changes to complex codebases
