Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Card)

About the Role

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. We're building new types of cards in partnership with card issuers, creating straightforward and flexible payment solutions. As Staff Software Engineer for our Backend Card team, you'll lead technical strategy and architecture for our EU operations, overseeing both high-speed transaction processing and post-transaction ledgering systems.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long horizon and align it with business-critical projects
• Lead all backend software engineering efforts for cards across the EU
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs
• Amplify team effectiveness through definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes
• Own your team's operations and availability by establishing monitoring, on-call rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting infrastructure
• Build a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, and sharing knowledge through writing and technical talks
• Develop talent through feedback, guidance, and mentorship
• Work across transaction processing systems that execute in milliseconds and reconciliation systems that handle post-transaction workflows

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience
• Proficiency in backend system design, development, and deployment at scale using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Proficiency in frontend application development
• Demonstrated experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating functionality through technical planning and execution
• Ability to write high-quality, maintainable code
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and moving fluidly between low-level language details and large system architecture
