Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Card Acquisition)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Card Acquisition team and take ownership of the critical first-impression experiences that build trust with our customers. In this role, you'll define technical strategy, mentor engineers, and drive both product impact and operational excellence.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Card Acquisition team, you'll work at the intersection of product, design, and engineering to build performant, accessible user experiences that directly influence conversion, retention, and business growth. You'll serve as a technical leader and force multiplier, navigating ambiguity while setting standards for code quality and operational reliability across your team.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through open-ended problems and providing support throughout execution
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on the full development lifecycle—from ideation through delivery—articulating technical constraints and trade-offs
• Proactively identify and lead solutions for project, process, technology, and business issues
• Establish and maintain operational health for your team's systems through monitoring, on-call rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting
• Set or improve code review and design standards, and advocate for quality practices across teams
• Develop talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example
• Participate in on-call rotation as required

Requirements

• 4+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin
• Proven track record building highly available distributed systems with AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs
• Ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others
• Proficiency making significant changes in large, complex codebases
