Job Description

Staff Software Engineer, Mobile (App Infrastructure)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. The App Infrastructure team owns the shared mobile platform that powers every feature across Affirm's mobile apps, including design systems, networking, observability, experimentation, CI/CD, and developer tooling. You'll work on high-impact infrastructure challenges while setting technical direction for a small, collaborative, and highly technical team.

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on App Infrastructure, you will define and execute technical strategy on a year-long horizon, balancing infrastructure investments with business-critical feature work. You'll be a force-multiplier for your team—owning operational excellence, on-call readiness, and the adoption of tools and processes across the broader mobile engineering organization. This role bridges technical depth with cross-functional collaboration, requiring you to partner closely with product management, design, and analytics to ensure architectural decisions are well-understood and sustainable.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate technical strategy for your team, aligning infrastructure roadmaps with business priorities and long-term sustainability goals
  • Collaborate across product, design, and analytics teams to identify technical risks, trade-offs, and requirements early in the development lifecycle
  • Own team operations and availability by designing monitoring, triage rotations, on-call playbooks, alerting policies, and testing strategies
  • Foster a culture of code quality and ownership by establishing review standards, design practices, and technical advocacy through writing and tech talks
  • Develop team talent through feedback, mentorship, and leading by example on technical decisions and operational rigor
  • Author and maintain specifications, runbooks, and tooling that other teams adopt and rely upon

Requirements

  • 7+ years of mobile application development and architecture experience
  • 4+ years of hands-on React Native development
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Demonstrated expertise with React Native and Expo, including authoring and migrating native modules and components
  • Experience managing complex state in React applications (Redux Toolkit proficiency is a bonus)
  • Track record performing React Native SDK major updates and debugging across the JS↔native boundary under the New Architecture
  • Knowledge of native OS release cycles and their impact on React Native applications
  • Hands-on experience with mobile testing and observability tools such as Maestro, Appium, Sentry, Crashlytics, Statsig, or LaunchDarkly
  • Demonstrated ability to build developer tools and infrastructure that teams actually adopt
  • Up-to-date knowledge of AI development practices and their application to mobile systems
