Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Online Storage)

Affirm is reinventing consumer credit with transparent, flexible payment options. The Data and Storage Services team builds and operates Affirm's data infrastructure—from transactional databases to analytics platforms—serving mission-critical financial systems at scale. We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Online Storage platform, which provides managed database services (MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Distributed SQL) to every service at Affirm.

About the Role

You'll lead the technical strategy and execution for Affirm's relational and key-value database platform. This is a high-impact position where you'll shape how the company stores, accesses, and manages data across OLTP systems while working directly with product, infrastructure, and SRE teams. You'll own the vision for improving how we build, operate, and optimize mission-critical financial transactional infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Set and drive the technical roadmap for database systems (relational and key-value) on a year-long horizon, aligning with business priorities and team capabilities
• Design and build scalable datastore platform components, including multi-region, horizontally scalable, and high-performance solutions
• Develop control planes for database management and self-service, automating schema migrations, disaster recovery, sharding, and performance tuning across hundreds of databases
• Collaborate across product, infrastructure, and SRE teams throughout the development lifecycle on database solutions
• Share expertise and mentor team members on database systems, operational patterns, and infrastructure best practices
• Guide the team in handling diverse data patterns: mission-critical financial transactions, data science models, and emerging persistence requirements
