Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Online Storage)

About the Role

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Data and Storage Services team manages Affirm's data infrastructure across OLTP and OLAP systems, including critical checkout databases, batch orchestration, streaming infrastructure, and large-scale data platforms. The Online Storage team provides managed databases as a platform for all Affirm services, supporting relational databases (MySQL), DynamoDB, distributed SQL, and Redis caching.

About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Databases (Relational and KeyValue) infrastructure. You will identify opportunities to improve how the organization builds, productizes, and operates this mission-critical infrastructure while working closely with peers to deliver solutions that unlock business value.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for your team on a yearly timescale and align it with critical, business-impacting projects
• Work closely with product, infrastructure, and site reliability engineering (SRE) teams to influence cross-functional initiatives
• Design and build components of a scalable datastore platform, leveraging experience in multi-region, horizontally scalable, globally available, and high-performance storage solutions
• Develop control planes for management and self-service of hundreds of databases at scale, automating schema and data migrations, disaster recovery, sharding, and performance tuning
• Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle, focusing on database solutions and architecture decisions

Requirements

This role requires deep expertise in relational and key-value database systems, experience designing and operating large-scale data infrastructure, and the ability to drive technical direction for a distributed team. You should have a proven track record building managed database platforms and working across multiple database technologies including MySQL, DynamoDB, and Redis.
