Software Engineer II, Backend (Recoveries)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. The Recoveries team, part of the Repayments organization, builds the platform that maximizes recovery of charged-off loans while detecting and minimizing discrepancies with business partner systems. In this senior backend role, you'll own quarterly goals, lead engineers through complex problems, and develop recovery strategies that manage loans through their final lifecycle phase.

About the Role

You'll take ownership of your team's quarterly objectives and guide engineers through ambiguous, open-ended challenges. Working closely with product managers, design, analytics, and backbook risk teams, you'll drive technical decisions that balance risk and trade-offs while managing the full delivery lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team; lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, technical constraints, and strategic decisions
• Proactively identify and lead solutions for project, process, technology, and business issues
• Maintain operations and availability by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership through code review standards, design practices, and knowledge sharing
• Develop talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Proficiency designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Experience shipping web applications with declarative UI frameworks like React or Vue
• Demonstrated expertise designing, implementing, and operating batch processing or asynchronous workloads (scheduled jobs, backfills, large-scale data processing) with focus on correctness, observability, and failure handling
• Ability to define technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs
• Proven capability making substantial changes safely in large codebases and developing tools and practices to enable team velocity
• Track record of owning your own growth and development
