Software Engineer II, Backend (Recoveries)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, offering consumers flexible buy-now-pay-later options without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Recoveries team, part of the Repayments organization, builds the platform that maximizes recovery of charged-off loans while detecting and minimizing discrepancies with business partner systems. In this senior backend role, you'll own the technical strategy for loan lifecycle management and recovery operations, collaborating with product managers and risk teams to develop scalable solutions.

About the Role

You'll lead engineers through complex, open-ended problems while owning quarterly goals and ensuring delivery excellence. This position requires balancing strategic technical decisions with operational reliability, from designing batch processing systems to managing on-call support and incident response.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, guiding engineers through ambiguity on open-ended problems
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, technical constraints, and risk assessment
• Design, develop, and operate backend systems handling batch processing, asynchronous workloads, scheduled jobs, and large-scale data processing with focus on correctness and observability
• Proactively identify and lead solutions for project, process, technology, and business issues
• Define and execute technical plans for significant features and system components with elegant, extensible designs
• Establish and maintain code review and design standards; create and monitor operational metrics
• Support on-call efforts and systems availability; develop team talent through feedback and mentorship

Requirements

• 4+ years of software engineering experience
• Proficiency designing and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
• Experience shipping web applications with declarative UI frameworks (React or Vue)
• Strong experience designing, implementing, and operating batch processing and asynchronous workloads with robust failure handling
• Demonstrated ability to make significant changes safely in large codebases with systematic practices and tooling
• Track record of writing high-quality, maintainable code and taking ownership of your own growth
